Quad Format 2015: Evidence Project

0for 2015 the quad are having their annual Format festival this year’s exhibition is based unto the legendary ‘evidence’ work by Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel from 1977.

from 1975-1977, Larry sultan and Mike Mandel selected photographs from a vast amount of images that were considered before they looked at them only in the genre of industrial, scientific, governmental and others. their project “evidence” was one of the first conceptual photographic works of the 1970s to demonstrate that the meaning of a photograph is conditioned by context and more important the sequence it is seen.

to me the images below when shown together suggest that someone has made a mess with rope. either the rope has been holding something up and then has been dropped creating a mess this is a more literal interpretation. but this could also have a deeper mean such as that the rope has been used to destroy someone’s life so maybe someone has hung themselves and that this is ‘evidence’ to a crime scene and that the ‘mess’ on the end represents a traumatic mess of them mental when committing suicide or the mental state of the suicidee’s family after they have died.

the concept behind a photograph can completely change somebody’s opinion of an image.

Eliott Erwitt’ has also done a sequence of work similar to the ‘Evidence work’ of Larry Sultan and Mike Mendal he said that images shown in a sequence are more interesting he has also said that:

Little story of an umbrella that didn’t want to be closed, by Elliott Erwitt.

i find this set of images interesting as he right, i that if you saw one image just one by itself they would be boring, but showing the story of how they can’t close they’re umbrella at the beach, especially on a windy day, this becomes humorous and interesting, well to me anyway.
