the degree show took place at the University of Derby and lasted from 29th of may until the 15th of june.

i didn’t actually attend the degree show due to illnesses so i had to look purely online and in brochures. and from there i found out additional information about each photographer by going onto their websites.

in the brochure the main photographers to whom captured my eye were;

Yana Buzko

discovering a space in the market for young girls who want to be stylised and have a modelling experience for a day she has decided to create a experience like this. she is catering for this experience with a team of stylists make-up and hair stylists to take beautiful pictures in stunning locations and as a result providing romantic and feminine images with a vintage feel to them for all models.

these images are poppy and sweet and they seem to look very professional to me and have been technically and aetheitcally very well composed each individual image is very matching from the hair, makeup and location to the atmospheric climate and the lighting each is very well executed to an extremely high standard.

Niall Doyle

he has such a precise and perfectly executed manner about his work. with each and every detail planned down to a tee before his shoots. controlled and refined the work he creates is brilliant to look at. he has also had the honour of recently working alongside of the Hasselblad master Bryn Griffiths as his retoucher for his upcoming exhibition.

his current project explores troupe l’ceil fragmented shapes, inspired by the ‘visual puzzle’ in contemporary ad campaigns. he believes this to be finding control is disarray which is much like the rest of his work possibly his style of photography reflects a life experience of struggle and controlled and refined photography fixes this. one of his images in his ‘fragmented series’ won him the title of BIPP’s Midlands Photographer of the Year and the winner of the student category.

Charlotte Fletcher

with a very broad interest in photography over the years charlotte has worked o various genres of photography from portraiture to landscape. she says that “this year i have really found y passion for portraiture. the feeling of being able to capture and immortalise a persons beauty reminds me of why i love picking up a camera.” this quote spoke to me personally as i believe this statement to be very true and is the main reason as to why i aspire to become a photographer some day, the sheer thought of being able to capture a moment is a wonderful concept.

the example of her work below is part of her series of images taken in collaboration with a derby University Fashion Student in which she had to capture all aspects of the coat which the student has designed and made in a style of her choosing.


in the exhibition itself she has worked hard to create fashion portraits which were based around the 50s era styles. the idea she had was to link between tween fashion and feminism. gender equality campaigns are her passion and she wanted to incorporate this into her photography exhibition. the portraits she took came alongside a fashion magazine article that discussed societies interest in vintage culture and how this reflects on the changes that have been made since the 50s era.

Georgina Burgess

has cool concept of making an entire body of work based around the idea of comfort food exploring the whole of the british comfort food idea. the final decision she came to as of what to photograph was taken rom the results of a survey created by AXA on the subject. her mother prepares food for her all the time from scratch so her idea of comfort food started at home.

all her images were themed around the idea of comfort food in winter and as it wasn’t winter at the time all of her images were only taken with natural light with a rustic and christmas time feel to all of them.

Equality is about the fair treatment of each individual person in society.everyone should support each other the same amount of effort no matter your indifferences. the indifferences you have are what make you diverse so diversity is the sex you are, your orientation, your race, age, religion or your interests. diversity means the differences that each individual has, equality and diversity is being different but still treated fairly and justly.

Photographic Journeys Across Our Cultural Boundaries

That was the subtitle of Them= Us, PhotoSensitive’s most explicit foray into exploring cultural diversity through photographs. The 1997 exhibit brought together PhotoSensitive’s photographers as well as six Canadian guest photographers. These images celebrate Canadians from diverse backgrounds, all of them preserving history and culture in what we proudly call our national mosaic. This exhibition toured 40 cities, towns and boroughs across Canada, presented by the Harmony Movement.



Many of the images celebrate people of different cultures and backgrounds getting along, and working or playing together. Many images in the exhibit are implicitly against racism and bigotry showing people of all ages and backgrounds trusting each other, engaging each other happily, while never shying away from their own uniqueness. all of these images are about the kindness of humanity and about sharing our lives together and about living in harmony despite our differences. no matter how diverse we should all be treated equal and fairly

another photographer i looked at was Mihaela Noroc who has travelled all around the world to 37 countries capturing her idea of beauty she said ‘ realised beauty is about being different,being yourself and keeping your culture and heritage’.

she believes that being a diverse person gives you a beautiful quality which is worth capturing and that everyone has a beauty in them all over the world there is not just one specific kind of beauty there are millions.

The women who were approached by Noroc reacted differently to the project, some were happy, while others were hard to convince.

“There were funny moments when I was showing them my photos and they didn’t believe that are taken by me. The fact that I’m a woman too helped a lot. In the beginning, I was really nervous and I was taking all the refusals personally.”

“In my opinion, beauty means to keep alive your origins and your culture and to be natural, sincere, authentic, particular, not necessary fashion or skinny,” she said.

“I want to show to the world, that we can be different and being yourself is the best bet you can make.”

norocs passion for being the beauty in diversity is inspiring and an idea close to my own heart. thee are no similarities in these women other than gender they are from different places with different beliefs, looks and lifestyles but they are all beautiful.

the photography competition has very specific guidelines and specifications to how the photograph is shot and how it is sent to the are the entry requirements.

This year’s theme is ‘What Matters Most’. The photo could include anything related to your studies, family, sports, achievements and could be in the past or present…basically we want to see images that reflect what’s important to you.

Show how much this means to you so we can see your expression and emotion in the photograph. Do this through your use of composition, techniques, light and colour, direction of light, depth of field or leading lines.

The competition is open to all AoC member college photography students.

what matters most to me above all things is caring for people and making sure they are ok, mostly my mother. i would like to photograph my mother as i believe her to be the one main thing in my life which has always been constant and to me “What Matters Most”.

  • i would to capture the cup of tea my mum has every morning as she always has it in the mug i bought her for mothers day a couple of years ago.

on the link below i got some extra information as to create a powerful narrative image this is a blog from a photographer.

i need to also think about whilst taking the image not making it too personal and remembering that people have personal preferences but are always drawn to the main feature of the image. telling a narrative is important you see setting, subject, person and various other aspects of the image that tell the visual story. theres always a hierarchy in an image of importance to the photographer also of important to people in general, and then again theres the visual hierarchy of what’s biggest and what stands out most. also something as simple a gesture, gaze and hand position can change an entire feeling and story of an image. seemingly ‘unimportant’ choices made when photographed say dress, camera awareness all play an important role in how a narrative gets interpreted and understood.

the images above present two very different types of pictures with two very different narratives. the first presents a seemingly shy woman but i believe that as you look closer she appears to have a small smile in the corners of her mouth and slightly squinted eyes which to me shows cunning and i believe that due to the background and mist she is up to no good in a mysterious place which a woman like her probably should not venture into. sl this from just a few key factors in an image. I’m sure many others interpretations of this image may be very different but my interpretation is this.

the second image portrays a confident and happy woman with a possible friend or acquaintance they both seem to be looking out of frame which i think is a handsome man to whom they wish to talk to, i have an understanding that their clothes look to be from the 30s 40s and in this era if you wanted a male to come over and talk to you and you were a man you would give then a ‘come here’ look and they would join you and i believe that that is what is going on here.

this third and very beautiful image (‘Lily’ from the series Another November by Laura Stevens) is a beautiful example of vulnerability the model herself of course may be feeling vulnerable due to the fact she is unclothed and in a bath tub being photographed but the acting here is incredible too such a delicate shot on a harsh background pf ripped walls creates the narrative that this is this girls bath and this is her home and that this to extend means she isn’t the most well off young woman on earth and doesn’t have enough money to fix her wall or to live in a safer more expensive accommodation. but as said earlier people have different narrative when taking and seeing an image the photographer actually has a narrative she had in mind and this is it below.

“Following the ending of a significant relationship in my life, an undoing began. Whilst adjusting to being a single woman, I started to create a photographic narrative based on the experience of losing love; directing other women to portray the gradual emotional and circumstantial stages, along the well-trodden track of the broken-hearted.By constructing images of the evolving chapters, I was allowed a vantage point from which to view the changes occurring in me, from feelings of pain, confusion and loneliness towards the reconstruction of my identity as an individual.

i will apply these techniques when i have my test shoot and actual shoot. nothing about this narrative image making is candid or spur of the moment as it will be planned out very intricately from the framing to the lighting to which objects are in view and which are not.

my test shoot contact sheet shows the plans that i had in mind. i first decided i wanted my mum sat in her seat and then i wanted to have some pictures of our goodbye and then outside images but i couldn’t go outside with the camera for this test shoot as it was raining and i am responsible for a college camera so i wanted to keep it dry.

out of all of my images unedited i chose a few because they show the characteristics of careing.

i chose these images because the narrative i had in mind for each was stronger than other narratives for other images. the first image in short was about caring and the angle of me looking up at her symbolises how i metaphorically and emotionally look up to her for for guidance.

the second image shows how hard a goodbye can be but the fact that we say goodbye in the morning is a sign we are close as many adolescents and people with parents tend to not say goodbye at the door and that this is again a morning ritual and we support each other through the day, we wait at the door for each other to leave as if to say ” you can do it you can get through today”.

the third image isnt even an image of my mum but she was offering me some of her tea her special tea and this shows sharing and compassion bothering others something as little as tea represents just how much she has given and supported me throughout my life. and even though you don’t know its my mother the cup also indicates a name “mama” and the narrative here begins to be who’s mama and the story begins you start looking for clues as to who she is and I’ve given just enough information to keep the viewer guessing long finger nails indicate woman, women clothing no wedding ring, comfy chair and a bit of curtain to show that its probably in a home.

and finally the last image has a lot of information to tell a story t keeps the eyes busy trying to figure out the narrative. i had the narrative as my mother carefully listening and caring for me i have shown caring a i have bought her the ug and she s on the phone which would keep people guessing as to who she was texting.

my final two edited images are these two. i believe that these represent personally and in general what matters most to post people, and i believe this to be respect and love but also your homely environment and where you feel comfortable.

the first image here shows that the absence of a person from an image doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re not there. here you can tell that a laptop being on and coats and bags in a chair may suggest that a person id present here. seeing a persons belongings and their private home and possessions makes you feel like you are a fly on the wall in the life of another. seeing this room with no people in it makes you try and understand the person or person who live there. the narrative i am trying to display here is that the more you are in someone else’s home that is a little ‘messy’ or ‘untidy’ you realise that you can understand them and see all the little details to which they hold so precious, being in someone else’s home reminds you of being in your home and if you’re not too judgemental of the mess in the image you can see the lovely environment for the creative mind this home is. honestly here this was just a photograph from my test shoot to see which angle and setting looked good for the shoot the following morning but when i had a peer’s point of view i got the understanding that most of my image were oo personal and that this image actually would be a good one to chose due to the fact that a lot of people could relate to its homely feel. the image originally was very dark but a NEF file i was able to change exposure and highlights to create a good bright image from the data that i had saved from using a RAW setting on my shoot.

the second image i have to admit is a vey personal image for myself as its my own mother and well i love her to pieces. this image shows how departure for me and my mother can be quite a hard thing as we support each other through everything and how the rest of the world from our experiences hasn’t given that support. i suffer with mental illnesses personally and my mother has always had to be strong through even her own depression for me. something just as simple as a goodbye in the morning which is a seemingly insignificant gesture to many is a very hard experience for myself and other anxious and depressed people, so my mother and myself try our very best to have a good start to the day with eachother and to ease each other to make it easier to leave out cosy home environment and tackle to day we have. this is the last thing i see (my mother leaving the door) before i have to be brave and leave my home for college and the walk through busy streets but knowing i have left a supportive family behind and i will be joining my supportive family again after college is a powerful motivator for me to get through the day. the processes i have used here are to stand quite close to the door so i do not lose any focus and to keep my aperture quite wide s that i could bring through the majority or light through the door to give my mum an almost halo like effect but more importantly to make outside look like a almost alien atmosphere to symbolise how scary it may seem but the fact that it is still very bright shows its really not that bad as it may feel.

Political Image

this Ukrainian woman walkthrough policeman riots after a section of a street in kiev was sectioned off after anti government riots got ugly and violence from police brutality.what really got me was the one officer with his tongue out in the background almost as if o say ‘don’t even bother trying to fight back’


Cultural Image

this image was only meant to be of an old man but actually ended up being an image which represented culture .it contains 3 different races of people and being accidentally captured the culture in this shot proves culture is everywhere and we see it everywhere and might not even realise, incredible.


Social Image

this image is of a friendship as dancing is a nonverbal form of communication and has been captured beautifully ‘mid twirl’ here. these dancers are escaping reality together because they are so close which shows they are socially close and friends.


on our trip to bradford media museum we had a great day. we saw some of the greatest images captured but the greatest photographers who have ever lived. not just contemparary but going back, all the way back to the very beginning of photography. we were taken  through the eras of photography and saw some of the earliest known photographic images, dating back to the 1820s, these three particular images were protected by glass and were in seperate frames under glass and watched by security cameras. this was necessary as they were the most rare and old photographs anywhere in existence in the world, and were produced by the pioneers of photography Joseph nicephore Niepce. they called this old process ‘heliograpy’ which means ‘drawing with light’. throughout the exhibition were the remarkable works of many photographers such as pioneers of photography such as Roger Fenton and Julia Margaret Cameron, also more contemporary works by some of today’s most influential photographers, such as Don McCullin, Terry O’Neill, Martin Parr and Steve McCurry.

Colin Harding (photography curator and photography technology specialist at the National Media Museum) was the curator of the ‘Drawn by light’ exhibition and his main goals were to show the best of the very best photography throughout time so a diverse range of people young, old, photographers and non-photographers could enjoy the excellece and the progression of photography since the 1800s. drawn by light was set out in a very interesting was because the images in the exhibition were set up not in chronological order as of when the images were taken, it was set up so that subject matter was the key element and that juxtaposes nicely, you could see how simular topics and types were represented in different eras which was lovely to see a very contrasted approach. Drawn by light offering out a condensed history of photography to the public is a very good idea because those who perhaps were not as interested in the arts as others can see all types of photography in one place and perhaps fall in love with the arts, as apposed to only seeing one style or one era and thinking it wasnt their ‘cup of tea’.

information throughout the day was clearly presented like they’d left all the working out where to go out and we were just there to enjoy it. labelling on each and every image was good as we had indication as to who it was by, when it was taken, when technique was used in the image process and also on most image when the photographer was born and when they died (if they had died). this is good from a students point of view as its a lot more convinient to have the information there but also from an observer’s point of view its nice to know a little history of the photographers themselves if you especially liked their image.

i think the general narrative is that because the exhibition demonstrates how photography has shaped the generations. photography is to capture a moment, a memory and that is a treasured thing. the As co-curator Colin Harding puts it, “The collection reveals how photography has fundamentally shaped our perception of the world and illustrates photography’s enduring power, richness and variety over nearly two hundred years of innovation and creativity.” and this is a good example of the entire story of the exhibition is but this is from my point of view of course, and i believe this to be

the day was very insiteful to me and i did have a few favorite images for different reasons but two of the images in the exhibition really spoke out to me personally and they are the ones i was thinking about when i left. when you linger at an image for 5 or so minutes you know its one of your favorites.

the first was an image entitled ‘Sadness’ by photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, taken in 1864. this piece really reached out to me as the honets look of innocence. this image actually of famous actor Ellen Terry, i then got more attached to this image as she was 17 at the time the image was taken. it was taken on her honey to a man more than thirty years older than her. ellen teryywas clearly a talented actor and has protrayed sadness well in the shooting process but the actor her self was unhappy as her marriage lasted less than a year.

my second favorite is by Lietenant Colonel Mervyn O’Gorman and is just a simple and elegant at the beach image. at first it seems nothing special just a snap but you look at it more and youre mesmarised by the colours and ‘christina’s’ beauty. its just a lietenant and a girl on a beach in 1913 but for a second it feels like youre there with them enjoying the day.

A simple chronology of great photographs would have been enough, but what is so remarkable about Drawn By Light is the way that the images are shuffled and juxtaposed so that they can talk to each other over time. i enjoyed the contrast of the old image and the contempary way the curator had decided to display the image with a kind of glowing light behind it, this emphasized colour and sharpness giving a more clear and enjoyable experience to look at the image.

Up until bradford i know that my understanding of narrative image making has developed vastly due to my knowledge of now knowing how to take an image for a certain situation say a sad woman or a confident actress. i know that changing the poster of the model or the position of a subject can make a big difference to the feeling of an image, going from a tall of proud stance to a arms crossed slightly slumped posture suggests fear and self-protection making an image defensive which effectively suggests that the person in question is scared or protecting themselves. i also know that location of an image is an important aspect of visual story telling as a castle and a car park could create to very different images. other aspects such as the background, surroundings and lighting techniques can take an image from gloomy to transcendent and from melancholy to ecstasy. simply changing exposure takes your image from dull to bright and in that changing a theme from supposedly sad to happy, these are easy changes that effectively make your image tell its story.

Here are the images i took for the 10 image challenge taken in Bradford city. i chose the word ‘Struggle’ to tell a narrative and this is the result.

think of how a guinness looks and how to photograph black and white find black and white or brown and white objects and frame them to be in correct ratio to what a pint of guinness looks like. below are some rough ideas and doodles i and about what to do but



here as you can see i have taken image of two tone things framed to look like the same liquid to foam ratio as guinness.


starting from the first image there is a wall and a lift entrance door. there is a white radiator and a green wall, a black painted doorway and a white wall behind it. there is finally a vending machine using the darker insides of the vending machine and a paler side of the vending machine walls.

these pictures took planning i had to know exactly what to look for when i left class and the general ratio is quite hard to capture as the camera likes a set point to focus on, with only two tones of colour this was very hard to do. i had to focus on a separate part of the image and then adjust light at the same time in order to capture this properly.

the concept here is that for a man or woman who just fancies a yummy guinness towards the end of the day there are reminders of guinness everywhere and how we see things makes us what one even more. for instance we could be looking at a radiator against a wall and think mmm that looks like a pint of guinness.


looking at adverts for beers and ales like werthingtons, carling and guinness they never try and make the advertising for woman.

this is understandable as a lot of men drink alcohol and are in pubs…but so are women so i took the liberty of advertising guiness for women but not obviously just using products only women tend to use as apposed to men.


above i have taken the girly idea of using a handbag and have seen that the black bag and the white wall behind it look like guinness.

this first image above is the general example of the girly take i would have on guinness mocking its masculine advertising which is usually used. i would go on to use say, tights and fluffy socks, more make-up and stuff like that. i had a more specific idea for make up that i could make into an actual humorous advert. i would show woman applying white lipstick with guinness on it and then a woman drinking a pint of guinness as you get a classic guinness foamy lip and show that both make your lips white and i could use words on each image saying ‘is it really that different?” as if to suggest that woman applying make-up is no different to her having a pint. there a doodle about the idea i have above.

a more embarrassing example of womanly guinness ideas was to make even more of a mockery of the manliness of guinness and make women sanitary towels and bras and thongs as part of the pint. for instance i have coloured in a sanitary towel to look like a guinness and have merged it into the background of a guinness pint on PhotoShop. taking these humorous womanly ideas could be seen as Gross, funny or sarcastic but it would be a good advertising stunt in my opinion and might even get just a few more or more whimsical women to actual try a pint of guinness and they might even enjoy it.


the kuleshov experiment is a very simple way of making advertising to a specific audience achieveable. for instance the two image above suggest that a woman could drink a pint of guinness and that would be the market for a sale. and then you have the two images below which instantly suggest that a male will be drinking this pint.


It is uncommon to find an advertisement for alcohol that is gender-neutral or intended to question gender stereotypes. gender stereotyping is so commonly used by alcohol advertisements as advertising companies see the sexism in our society and use it to their advantage by trying to link their product with the attractiveness towards the opposite gender. In our society though drinking is common to mostly all age types it is has a massive effect on the social habits of young adults. Nightlife and alcohol go hand in hand, and this is generally the stage in life where people are most concerned with attracting someone else rather than achieving professional success, or raising a family. sexism its a good marketing brand and seems to get many especially men interested in the alcoholic beverage which is being sold.

when i realised to extend of the gender stereotyping in alcohol advertisement i decided to challenge what a woman should be drinking, why can a woman not have a pint at the end of the day? and furthermore why can a man supposedly not have a glass of wine with dinner? there is absolutely no connection to which type of drink a gender should be ‘allowed’ to drink there should be no restrictions of what a female or male should drink just because an advertisment said its not the drink for them.

a general idea i had for an advertisement would be a page split into three sections like a comic book. an example and a rough doodle will be shown below this text.

here as shown i am definitely not the strongest drawer in the world but you get the gist. the idea is that the first two images could change with every advertisement showing things which women have been able to do despite them being seen as ‘manly’ things to do for centuries and then the third image is her enjoying a pint in a pub as if to say if we can conquer all these very hard things then I’m sure women can handle a pint of guinness.

i would incorporate small guinness like details into each image for instance each image would be in black and white to keep with the vintage guinness style that the advertisements usually have (so there are not too many changes all in one go just the target audience). i would make tiny things like the boxing gloves black and white like guinness (in the same ratios as the images i have taken) and then use the advertising strips you get in football pitches and have them completely covered with the guinness adverts. in the next image i have amended these details to give a better example of the images.

and then finally the last image i believe has been portrayed badly it would be more like a woman enjoying a pint go guinness and savouring the flavour with maybe some men around her looking on approvingly would be a nice added touch.

Describe image objectively:

  • a man is supporting the woman
  • they could be a couple
  • the mans regimentals (army uniform) suggest he may be off to war soon or has come home recently.

the image here is about recreating the story within the book by taking the characters off the page and creating a book page sculpture. the photographer Thomas allen has then captured the creation he has made and kept it as an image. The genre? creative Analyse and deconstruct image into social and cultural meanings? the aspects of this image such as the woman facing the wall suggest that there has been a fight and that the man is reassuring the woman of his feelings. there was almost a feel of war as the man is in regimentals and the woman appears to be distanced from the man this could be more than just a metaphor maybe a goodbye. the images them selves as they are two dimensional they’re easier to understand a story not three dimensional and not as distracting. as Thomas allen conveys relationships and difficult human characteristics and moments he uses specific lighting and focusing to create the story he is trying to tell. the cut book illustrations are very vivid. thomas allen works towards creating action scenes and love triangles from the already vivid covers of pulp novels.
